Mega disk cloud storage. MEGA cloud storage

Remember the times when 40 GB on your hard drive seemed like an unaffordable luxury? Now the bill goes to hundreds of gigabytes, and often - to terabytes, and we are so used to it that we take up space on PC disks indiscriminately - with anything.

Meanwhile, economy and comfort have not yet been canceled, and the existence, prosperity and bright prospects of cloud storage prove their viability. Over the past few years, the services of such Internet services have been developing in gigantic steps, and as an example, we can cite several cloud data storages:

1. Yandex.Disk - offers beginners 5 GB of free space for storing files of different formats and extensions, plus various bonuses. For example, if you have been using Yandex mail for 5 years, you will be given another 2 GB of Disk space.
2. Google Drive - 15 GB free space.
3. Microsoft SkyDrive - 7 GB free instead of 25 GB previously offered.
4. - 2 GB plus an expansion of disk space for attracting referrals.
5. Apple iCloud - 5 gigabytes of free space.
6. - here you can borrow no more than 40 MB for each note for free, and use the traffic volume for writing / editing notes up to 60 MB per month.
7. Amazon Google Drive - 5 GB.
8. Box cloud service - 5 GB.
9. Service SugarSync - 5 GB.
10. Cloud storage Mega.co.nz - 50 GB of free disk space.

Cloud storage Mega.co.nz

All of the above services can work not only on stationary PCs, but also on all mobile applications, which undoubtedly expands their scope and increases their popularity. But the leader in the offered free gigabytes is still Mega.co.nz - 50 GB is not a joke, they still need to be filled with something, so I propose to talk in more detail about this cloud service - Mega.co.nz. By the way, I actively use this service, since it is stable, anonymous, and its creators are well-known people.

The head of the company that offers the services of this storage - Kim Dotcom, founder of the Megaupload service, which closed two years ago at the suggestion of the US Department of Justice and the FBI. You may remember that story. Actually, their old exchanger was quite a handy thing. But now Kim's new brainchild is even cooler. Let's talk about it in more detail.

Now the Mega service provides not only the usual storage of data in the cloud using on a PC, but, as previously promised by the developers, they have already included the ability to work from mobile devices - iPhone, iPad, devices on, Win 8, mount the file system for Windows, and etc. That is, it will be possible to send files directly to the cloud. For example, your photos from a smartphone will be stored in the gadget, but at the same time they will be transferred to Mega.co.nz, so the likelihood of unexpected loss or damage of files will be completely excluded. All your data is encrypted in transit, and no one but you can unpack it for reading.

Advantages and differences of Mega

1. The main feature and difference of the Mega.co.nz cloud service from similar resources in the proposed initial free disk space is 50 GB. In Mega.co.nz you can upload files of any size, with any extension, in any format - there are no restrictions on this.

2. The abbreviation MEGA is the name for MEGA Encrypted Global Access.

3. The main features of Mega are the same as for other resources - downloading, storing files on a third-party drive, and the ability to exchange files with your friends and colleagues by transferring links or encrypted access. Files are encrypted in the browser using the AES algorithm, that is, you are protected from unauthorized access. Links for transferring files are also encrypted, and even service workers do not have access to your data. At least they claim it.

4. Service for the exchange and storage of Mega files is multilingual, so when working with it you will not have any language difficulties - just select the desired language in the control panel.

But to start using cloud storage, you need to go through a simple registration procedure.

Registration and getting started at Mega.co.nz

As you can see from the registration link, the entrance to the site https://mega.co.nz/ occurs via a secure connection. Further on the main page, you need to select the Russian language for convenient work - the menu is located at the top right. Now you can register:

When registering, you need a real email address, the rest of the data can simply be taken out of your head. After we fill in all the fields and click the "Create an account" button, we will receive an email with a confirmation link for our registration:

We will click on this link in the letter and on the service page we will confirm our account - for this there is a form in the upper right corner, that is, just enter your email address and password. This is done once - then the service will use the cookies of our browser. When confirming the registration, we will be asked to create our own individual key, which will determine our authentication. The creation of a key is playful in nature, and I even played too much, missing the moment when the key was already created.

The game looks like knocking out the bricks with a ball that make up the MEGA inscription. As soon as you hit 100% on the scale at the top of the screen, a key will be created:

And after clicking the "Finish" button, go to your page in the Mega.co.nz cloud service:

How to use the Mega.co.nz service

There is a very slight difference in using the service when working on and Google Chrome, which I will discuss below. In the meantime - about the common points of management and use. On the right side of your page, you see a management column and a display of the storage structure. Above - a menu for downloading, viewing and managing files. That is, in the drop-down menu with already uploaded files, you will see the opportunity to get a link to the file, the ability to copy, edit, etc.

Mozilla Firefox browser users can install an add-on to their browser MEGA extension... The developers of this add-on promise that after installing it, you will notice a significant improvement in the speed of downloading files. This result is ensured by batch uploading an unlimited number of files without limiting their size. Each link in the Mega.co.nz service is captured by your MEGA extension and remains local (JavaScript is not loaded from servers). The service provides reliable automatic updates thanks to a cryptographic signature with an encrypted key.

Without installing this add-on, for more efficient work with the Mega service, the developers suggest using the Google Chrome browser. Since I have been using several browsers all my computer life, I also installed the recommended extension in Firefox, but, to be honest, I did not notice any difference in the operation of the cloud service. The application can be installed both from the "Add-ons" of the browser and from the MEGA service ("Menu" - "Applications" - "Firefox Application")

It is better to use the Google Chrome browser if you are going to upload entire folders with files to the cloud - in Mozilla this is not possible, and Chrome can upload both files and folders:

This is how the storage control panel looks like in the Google Chrome browser, but in Mozilla Firefox there is simply no "Upload folder" button - there is only a "Upload file" button. Using the "Upload file" button, you can upload a file to the cloud from your personal computer. After you click on the "Upload folder" button in Google Chrome, an Explorer window will open, select a folder in it to upload it to the file storage, and that's it - the download has begun.

Now how to get around this problem in Firefox. Let's say you want to download the entire folder - do not install a new browser for this! Then you just need to create a folder of the same name in Mega (item "New folder" in the menu), and upload all files into it (press Ctrl + A to select all at once) that are located in the same folder on your computer.

We continue to familiarize ourselves with the service. In the "My Account" item, you will see not only that you are using a free account, but you will also see your amount of cloud space used, and you can also change your profile settings or set up data transfer:

There is a lot you can do in the settings (Menu - My Account). For example, change the number of parallel connections for downloading files, as well as the number of parallel connections for downloading files. You can also enter a limit on the download speed.

If you click on the menu button "Menu" - "My Account", you can learn more about the rules for using the cloud service Mega.co.nz. I won't tell you much about the Pro account, since I haven't used it yet - there are enough free 50 GB. But after you click on the "Upgrade your status" button in your free account, you can choose any paid package from the offered ones in order to be able to store more of your data in the cloud - from 500 GB to 96 TB. I personally do not imagine such a volume - 96 terabytes, but, nevertheless, if you think carefully, you can find a use. For example, for backing up site databases, etc.

Let's continue working with files - you can simply create a new folder to load some thematic files into it. To do this, click on the "New folder" button and rename the folder as you need. In this new folder, you can also create other subfolders, into which you already upload files. If you click on a folder (file) with the right mouse button, then in the drop-down context menu you can see the corresponding commands for your actions with the folder (file). As you can see, there are many possibilities, including the ability to get a link for transferring to other users. The link will be encrypted.

If you have not limited the speed of downloading files in the settings of your cloud, then the speed of downloading data will be unlimited and will depend only on the speed of your PC's Internet connection. Then work with folders / files is exactly the same as on a regular computer - you can edit them, get links to them, move them, allow them to be shared, copy, etc. The process of uploading and downloading files is displayed at the bottom right of the page on the service - click on the icon

How to share folders

You can set shared access rights on the folders that you will store in the Mega co nz cloud storage. To do this, just right-click on the folder, and in the drop-down context menu, click "Share". Next, you will see the "Sharing" window, in which you need to specify the email address of the user to whom you want to grant sharing rights. For this user, you can configure the rights - for example, set the rights "Read only", "Read and write", "Full access". After that, the sharing rights can allow users with the permissions you set to edit the files, or just view them, or just download them. There can be any number of such users.

After we specify the email address for providing general access, a letter will be sent to his mail with a link that is necessary to go to the service and gain access to the specified folder. The shared folders are slightly different in appearance from the rest of the cloud storage folders, and look like this:

How to get a link in Mega.co.nz

The Mega.co.nz service has the ability to provide other users with links to download files that you post in the Mega cloud service. To get such a link, you need to right-click on the file, and in the pop-up context menu, click on the menu item "Get link". In a new window that opens, you will see your (encrypted or unencrypted) link to download the file. In general, all links for downloading files in the Mega.co.nz cloud service are issued of two types, and the type of link will depend on the degree of confidentiality of the security keys.

If the link itself is formed in unencrypted form, then the file is transmitted encrypted anyway, and only if the user has followed this link, the file is decrypted and becomes available for download. That is, until someone downloads this file, it will be stored in encrypted form. If the link itself is encrypted, then only the user who received the link to the file along with a special security code (key) can download the file from this link. Without this security code, the recipient will not be able to download the file from the link.

In the image below you can see - if the item "With the file key" is activated, then the encrypted code is embedded in the link itself, and it is available for download to all users. And vice versa - if you do not check this box, then the address user will be able to download the file only if he enters the key you provided separately.

Also, the user to whom the link to the file was intended can save it in his cloud located at Mega.co.nz. To do this, after receiving the link, you need to click the "Import" button. With this option, the link will not be downloaded to your computer, but will simply be moved from one account to another. It is clear that to carry out such an operation, the recipient must also have his own disk space in the Mega.co.nz cloud, just like, for example, in. You can see all these possibilities in the figure below:

How to download a link with an individual key (second option)? Below in the image you can see his solution. In the case of a separately transmitted key, the recipient will be able to download the file if he receives from you both the link and the key to download the file from the cloud storage. You will receive the key itself by copying when transferring the file (in the picture above - the item "Copy keys"). All this data (both a link for sharing and a link with a separate key) you send to the user by regular email.

After clicking on the "Decrypt" link, in a new window, the user will have to enter the security key received from you to download the file, or to save it in his own cloud storage. After the key is entered, the user must click the "Download" button and check the box "I agree with the terms of service of MEGA", or simply import the file to his cloud.

After the file has been fully downloaded, the Download Completed window will open, and the user will be prompted to save the file manually in any convenient place on the computer to complete the download.

And the last thing - all files that will be placed by you on the Mega.co.nz cloud storage service will be encrypted - I already mentioned this above. On the one hand, this is great, but on the other hand, you will not be able to visually view their contents, play or listen to audio and video files while they are in the cloud. That is, in order to use these files, you will need to move them to your computer or mobile device. To completely delete all uploaded files, you need to move them to the trash, and then empty it too.

I am sure that all active Internet users have heard about the history of the closure of the popular file hosting Megaupload and the misadventures of its creator. And they probably know about the new project of Kim Dotcom called Mega... As a reminder, this service is a reincarnation of Kim's previous creation, but on a completely different platform.

When creating it, all the shortcomings and errors of Megaupload were taken into account and the emphasis was placed primarily on the stability of the file hosting service. And not only to network loads, but also to attacks by copyright holders. For this, great attention is paid to the confidentiality and security of your data. All files uploaded by you are encrypted with a special algorithm, so the administration of the service has no idea about the content of your accounts and, accordingly, cannot be held responsible for it. For the same purpose, Mega servers are located in different countries, so if there are problems with the laws in one country, this will not entail the collapse of the entire service and your data will remain intact.

Today we want to acquaint you with the work of this service and offer you a short screenshot tour of its functions.

To get started, you need to register. To do this, you need to provide your name, mailing address and password. The service is perfectly Russified and well-designed.

After registration is complete, you will be sent a login link to your specified email address. By clicking on the link, you will have to wait a couple of minutes until special secret keys are generated for you, with which the data will be encrypted.

We get into our cloud storage. Everything is clear and simple here: on the left is the folder tree, in the center is the file display area, and on the top is the toolbar. Files can be uploaded by clicking on the button New upload or by simply dragging and dropping into the service window. Downloads are extremely fast.

Files can be organized into folders. Moving files between folders is done by dragging and dropping or using the context menu (see below). The nesting level of directories is not limited.

In the pop-up window that appears, a link is generated to download the file.
Pay attention to the options at the top of this window. If only included Link to file, then your recipient will not be able to download the file without entering a special password, which you can send him separately by e-mail. In this way, you can publish download links in public places, such as a blog or forum, but only allow certain individuals to download.
If additionally marked File key, then anyone can download the file using the created link. Checkboxes Name and file size add the appropriate file characteristics.

The folder context menu is slightly different. There is an item here Shared access... With it, you can invite your co-workers, friends, or family to share. Invitations are sent by e-mail, and access can vary. Read only - view only, Read & Write- viewing and uploading your files to a folder, Full access- viewing, downloading and deleting files.

In chapter Account you can view the fullness of your storage, buy additional space, change the data transfer settings and some other options.

Some personal impressions

File sharing service Mega makes a mega impression. Excellent speed, clear and pleasant interface, 50 gigabytes of disk space, no restrictions on traffic and the size of uploaded files, plus complete free and privacy of your data. It's just some kind of holiday!

The capabilities of the Mega service can be used for a variety of purposes. First of all, this is the dissemination of various types of information, which will greatly delight the pirates of all continents. However, the possibilities of limited access by passwords can also be useful for the legal sale of their creations, for example, by musicians. Sharing folders makes Mega an interesting tool for organizing remote work. And of course, a banal backup of information important to you.

The only thing that Mega is missing at this stage is a desktop and mobile client for different operating systems. Considering the young age of the service, one can hope that the developers simply haven’t had time yet and that such a client will appear soon. After that, I see no obstacles for Mega to become the new standard for cloud storage.

And Microsoft SkyDrive.

But the MEGA cloud storage is not so well known, although it offers an unlimited free use of as many as 50Gb, available immediately after registration!

If you do not mind such a solid "increase" to the hard drive, and you want to know how to get these same 50 gigabytes and effectively dispose of them, then read today's review!

Where did the MEGA.NZ service come from?

Since you are going to entrust the service with some of your personal data, it will not be superfluous to find out where it actually came from, and who is behind it ...

You've probably heard about such storage as Megaupload. It was closed in 2012 by the decision of the US authorities - those involved in the creation of the service, including its founder Kim Dotcom, were accused by the FBI of copyright infringement (storage and distribution of licensed content). Exactly a year later, Kim Dotcom launched a new service on the mega.co.nz domain.

Currently, the entrance to the cloud is available at mega.nz, so if you come across similar reviews of this repository, where mega co or mega co nz is indicated as the address, you should know that they are hopelessly outdated :)

Do I need to register for Mega?

On the main page of the repository, you will see a big red button with a call to drag files onto it and start using the service.

One gets the feeling that registration for work is not needed at all. In principle, this is so - you can immediately upload some of your files to the cloud and even see them in the storage. However, without registration, your uploaded data will be deleted from the storage after you close the page or browser:

Therefore, go through the standard registration process, after which you will immediately receive 50 gigabytes of cloud space for free!

Required settings immediately after registration

Mega nz will pay great attention to data storage security and privacy. We will talk about this in detail a little later, but for now I will indicate what must be done immediately after registration.

Since the service does not store your password on its servers, if you lose it, you will not be able to restore access to your account. To avoid this problem, you need to download and save the recovery key on your PC:

This is a necessary precaution that should not be neglected! Agree, it will be a shame to lose all your files in the cloud just because you forgot your password.

How to use Mega storage

On the left side of the window in the menu, click on the cloud icon:

You will find yourself in your cloud drive. Using the tools in the upper part of the window, you can create new folders, upload files there and even upload ready-made folders with files from your computer.

Working with the storage interface is no more difficult than working with Explorer in Windows. Right-clicking on a folder or file brings up a context menu with a whole range of options.

With its help you can:

  • Get information about an item (size, creation date, etc.)
  • Assign colored labels and add to favorites
  • Rename
  • Move within disk, copy, delete
  • Download
  • Share folders
  • Create a public link to download files

The developers, of course, took into account their negative experience with Megaupload, therefore, when creating a public link, such a window will be shown, with the terms of which you just have to agree:

The service does not impose any restrictions on the size of uploaded files! Within your 50 GB quota, you can upload thousands of small files, or, for example, two files of 25 gigabytes each. Keep in mind, however, that browsers themselves have functional limitations on the size of the files they can download. The most vulnerable browsers in this regard are Internet Explorer, Firefox and Safari, which do not yet fully support HTML5.

Sharing File Folders

You can organize general access to any folder in your online storage (share it). To do this, do the following manipulations:

  1. Click on it with the right mouse button and select the "Share" option in the drop-down context menu.
  2. Specify the email address of the user to whom you want to share access to the folder (you can specify a whole list of users at once).
  3. Select an access method: read-only, read-write, or full access.

After that, the specified user will receive an email with a link to access the shared folder.

How to link to a file in the Mega nz repository

In addition to accessing folders, you can allow any user to download some individual files from your repository.

To do this, right-click on any file in the cloud and select the "Get link" option:

  1. Link without decryption key
  2. Key link

Also in this window you can copy the decryption key itself separately. What is the difference between these types of links? And it is very important!

In the first case, the user, following the link, will have to enter the decryption key that you will tell him to download the file in a special window. And in the second case, the user follows the link with the already "embedded" security key and can immediately download the file.

For an overview of the storage functionality and settings that were not included in the review, see this video:

Why can Mega be trusted with personal data?

  1. The developers pay the utmost attention to the confidentiality of the stored data. The abbreviation MEGA itself stands for Mega Encrypted Global Access, i.e. Mega Encrypted Global Access).
  2. Encrypt files directly in the browser using the AES algorithm.
  3. The service does not store user passwords for accessing the cloud drive.
  4. All files in the vault are encrypted and cannot be viewed without a security key. Even if attackers gain access to the company's servers, they will not be able to read user data.
  5. Even for files intended for public download, you can generate access keys separately.

Hello.

Some users forced me to write this article with their whining. More and more cool materials began to appear on the site, which are available for download using the Mega cloud storage. As time has shown, many users are unable to download the course. The question immediately arises: “why do you need a course if you cannot even do the simplest action, how to download the material ?!”. If earlier these comments caused a smile and laughter, now it has begun to strain a little and those who write such comments resemble a primitive sponge, as in the preview to this article. In the future (already in the very near future), voluminous cool materials are expected, which will be available for download via Mega. If you have problems downloading- read this article, as this issue will not be raised anymore and no one will break materials into hundreds of pieces for the sake of some users and re-upload them to other repositories. Users who continue to whine will be sent to learn PC skills and will be temporarily isolated from society.

So, let's see why exactly Mega? Everything is very simple. For us, this is a convenient storage facility, where there are no restrictions on the volume of uploaded material, where there is a large disk volume and where complaints are loyal. Materials for users are available free of charge, so either learn to download or do not download at all. Suppose you have found the course you want and it is uploaded to Mega. First of all, make sure that the storage itself is open for you. If Mega is not available in your country (some providers block the storage), use a proxy or vpn to bypass the block. Now the simplest thing is left - it's to download the material. There are 2 easiest ways to download:

1 way. This method is suitable for downloading small files. Use method 2 to download large files. The first way- this is to use downloading through a regular browser. As practice has shown, the Google Chrome browser works best with Mega. Therefore, we advise you to use it. How is downloading through the browser: First, the material is loaded into the cache, then after the complete download, you can save it to any folder (if the folder selection is not configured, the material is saved to the downloads folder).

Press the button "Download in browser" and wait for the download to complete. The tab cannot be closed!

You can also use Mega's software - MegaSync and synchronize files, but we did not try to download this method, although some users praise this particular method. Also, according to some users, files need to be imported to their cloud drive for a successful upload, but in general it is not necessary to do this. After downloading a large file through the browser, we recommend clearing the browser cache, for example, using the CCleaner utility.

Method 2. Download using the Mipony program. Mipony program can be downloaded from the official website... We recommend using this method, since the program is very convenient and has many advantages, for example, the software supports downloading files (like a torrent) and does not create temporary files, unlike downloading through a browser. Some antiviruses may swear at the program, but there is nothing wrong with that. The program does not steal anything and is not malicious. Paranoid people can use the program in a virtual machine. Install the program (everything is very simple) and run it. First of all, open the "Options" tab and make sure that there is no speed limit.

Mega(file hosting) is a secure cloud storage and file sharing service that provides 15 GB of reliable storage for free. You can expand your cloud storage using a paid Pro account from 200GB to 4TB.

Unlike many other cloud storage providers, with Mega, your data is only encrypted and decrypted using client devices. Thus, your data is reliably protected and available only to you. Mega encrypts all content directly in the browser or MEGASync client using the AES algorithm.

Your data is available anytime, from any device, anywhere. Add files, sync folders with the cloud and other devices, share data with trusted contacts - the update happens in real time. You can access files using a computer, smartphone or tablet, any browser.

Key benefits of MEGASync

Security: Your data is encrypted from the place of dispatch to the place of delivery. No one will be able to intercept them during storage or movement.

Flexibility: Synchronization of any folders on your computer, smartphone or tablet with cloud storage. Synchronize any number of folders at the same time.

Speed: Take advantage of the powerful MEGA infrastructure and the ability to send over multiple connections.

Generosity: Store up to 50GB for free when using MEGA Achievements.

The MEGASync client is available for Windows computers (expected to support Mac OS X and Linux) and iOS and Android mobile devices.
