Change internet explorer home page. How to make the start page look like a search engine in Internet Explorer

It often happens that after installing a new program or panel in the browser, when it starts, it loads a completely different initial (start) page that it was. I will try to explain in detail how you can change or disable the start page in the most popular browsers: Internet Explorer, Mozilla FireFox, Google Chrome and Opera.

Changing the start page in different browsers

Settings in Google Chrome

In Google Chrome, there are two options for the start page: predefined in the settings or quick access with a list of frequently visited sites.

  1. To change the home page settings in the Google Chrome browser, click the key-shaped icon in the upper right corner of the program. In the drop-down menu, select the "Parameters" item.

    Go to browser options settings

  2. The settings tab will open. The Starter Group offers three settings:
    • open the main page;
    • restore the last open tabs;
    • open the following pages (here you can list which will open when the browser is launched).
  3. In the settings of the "Main page" you can choose one of two options:
  4. Ready. The tab can be closed, there are no buttons to save the settings. After these steps, the next time you start Google Chrome, it will open the start page that you configured.

Internet Explorer

  1. Open the Internet Explorer settings menu: right-click on the browser icon and select the "Properties" item in the drop-down menu.

    Go to browser properties

  2. Or launch Explorer and click the gear icon in the upper right corner. Open the menu open "Properties" - "Internet Options".

    Go to the properties and settings of the browser

  3. The standard Internet properties menu will open. To open the browser with an empty start page, delete everything from the "Home" field and click the "OK" button. If you need to open certain pages, enter their addresses, one in each line.

    We fill in the addresses of the pages that need to be opened when the browser starts

How to change in Mozilla Firefox

Now let's talk about Mozilla Firefox.

How to change the start page in the Opera browser

In the Opera browser, the settings are about the same as in Firefox, but there is still a slight difference.

  1. The settings menu is invoked by pressing the "Ctrl + F12" key combination.
  2. In the drop-down menu of launch options there is an additional item "Show launch window". When you select this item, with each launch Opera will ask you what to open.

If you are looking for a way to delete the start page or search from mail.ru, then this is the place for you:

Most people have certain websites that they check every time they open Internet Explorer. This could be a corporate site, a search engine (like Google), your Facebook page, or even your personal website. You can change your home page in Internet Explorer as you see fit. To change or make the start page for Internet Explorer, do the following:

Step 1

Click the "Service" button in the upper right corner (depicted as a gear). If you have an older version of IE, the Tools menu can be opened from the toolbar at the top.

Step 2

From the Tools menu, open Internet Options.

Step 3

In the "Home page" field, change the current address to the page you need using one of the following methods:

  1. Manual URL entry. If you know the homepage address, you can simply enter it in the appropriate field.
  2. Use the current address. Click on the "Current" button to use the page that is currently open in your Internet Explorer.
  3. Use default value. Click the Home button to return to the page that was installed with your browser.
  4. Assign an empty tab. Click on the "Use New Tab" button to hide the home page completely. Instead, a new tab will open at startup. This option can save time and bandwidth, especially if it's limited.
  5. Also, you can set several important pages for you as start pages. When launched, they appear as tabs on the home page - just enter the URL of the pages you want in the field on a new line each of them.

When finished, click the "OK" button.

How to block changing IE start page

It often happens that a home PC or laptop can be used by several people. For example, friends and family members. Some of them may accidentally change the start page or put their own, which is inconvenient for you. Also, some programs may also try to change the browser home page. In such cases, blocking IE's start page change is a useful feature.

Method 1 - using group policy

If you want to prevent any users from changing the IE home page, use the edit in Group Policy - this is the easiest and most reliable way. To do this, run it (Run command - gpedit.msc)

and go to the next section "User Configuration", find and open the "Administrative Templates" folder, then "Windows Components" and click on "Internet Explorer".

In the list, find the option "Disable changing the start page" and double-click on it. In the pop-up window for setting parameters, mark the item "Enabled" and click "OK".

Prevent changing the home page using the registry

If the policy editor didn't help, or you didn't find the option you were looking for, the registry will help you. Open the Run dialog box (Win + R). And enter the command "Regedit" (without quotes). Press Enter to open the Registry Editor Management Console.

Expand the HKEY_CURRENT_USER branch, then in this branch open the Software sub-branch, Policies in it, and finally Microsoft. Find the "Internet Explorer" branch and expand it.

In the "Control Panel" section, find the "HomePage" parameter and change its value to 1.

In order to permanently fix the start page in Internet Explorer, making it permanent, unchanged, without resorting to the help of additional programs and antiviruses, there are three ways.

Fast: Set home page in Internet Explorer browser settings

Open Internet Explorer browser settings: Tools - Browser Options - General, and enter the homepage address. The browser will open this page every time you launch it. You can install several pages at once by entering each address on a new line, and then when you start the browser, these pages will open in different tabs. If you want a blank page to open when you start the browser, then instead of the address, enter about: blank.

This method is simple, but does not protect against changes to the home page by malware and scripts.

Safe: Setting a block on changing the browser home page in Group Policy settings

If you have user rights, then simply enter into the search gpedit.msc... If you are a regular user, then you need to run the local group policy editor with administrator rights. To do this, enter the command in the search cmd, and run Command Prompt as administrator.

After that enter in the command line gpedit.msc.

In the Local Group Policy Editor, go to User Configuration - Administrative Templates - Windows Components - Internet Explorer and double-click the setting Disable changing home page settings.

If you enable this setting, then all users, including administrators, will not be able to change the home page. You can immediately specify which page to open as your home page.

If you want a blank page to open when the browser starts, then enter about: blank... After that, save the settings and reboot for the changes to take effect.

This method provides complete protection against changes to the home page if you are working in Windows with normal rights.

Automatic: Preventing changes to the browser home page in the registry

Exactly the same result as in the previous case can be achieved if you edit the registry. To do this, you need to either go into it and change a few entries, or run a configuration file that will do everything for you. Let's create such a file. To do this, create a text document and write the following code into it:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 "HomePage" = dword: 00000001 "Start Page" = "about: blank"

After that, change the file extension from TXT on REG, and run it. If you have administrator rights, the registry will be edited, and you will only have to reboot for the changes to take effect.

Today almost all of us cannot live without the Internet. We use it for both work and leisure. And it is natural that the number of users of the global information network is growing. But not everyone has experience with browsers yet. For many, this and that word raises a sea of questions.

But nevertheless, overcoming the gaps in the knowledge of the virtual network, users of it subsequently receive colossal opportunities for their self-development.
So, for many novice Internet proponents, the browser home page is very important. Why?

Yes, because the settings saved on it allow the user to immediately start performing the necessary functions without remembering, for example, the name of the search engine or the site that he would like to visit again due to the interesting and useful information posted on his platform.

The browser home page can be changed by the user at his own discretion. Someone changes the design of the desktop, some of the windows and the location of functional control panels, and some find it easier to optimize their work in the browser by installing a comfortable start page.

Today, the most used browser for accessing the Internet is Internet Explorer, it works in a standard way, that is, through it you can open the pages of various sites, use their information at your discretion.

By default, Internet Explorer is set to the Microsoft website as the start page for the browser. However, many users are not satisfied with this alignment. After all, the Internet is often used in order to find the necessary information. So many are trying to change this nuance, having designed a home page to suit their color and taste, so that each subsequent entry into the network is not difficult and brings only the desired result.

The user's favorite browser home page configured and saved by the user can be changed automatically. This happens under the influence of programs downloaded from the Internet, one of the installation conditions for which is the introduction of new software into the browser settings. Therefore, when installing something, you need to clearly read all the prerequisites that are highlighted and be extremely careful so as not to enjoy "surprises" later.

All changed settings can be corrected manually, but if attentiveness is not worked out, you will have to do it very often.
To change the home page to suit your preferences, you need to do the following: open a browser, find the gear icon under the button to close the window, by right-clicking on it, select the Properties menu. Several tabs will appear in the window that opens. In the uppermost of them, you need to register the address of the site from which the work on the Internet should start, you can enter several such addresses, after which the Apply and OK buttons are pressed.

In order to delete an unnecessary start page, the tabs address field is cleared. In the empty window that opens, you need to make corrections or open a specific browser page and make your own corrections, and then click the Current command.

Many novice browser users make mistakes when setting up their home page. Often, the addresses of the sites from which you want to start your work in the browser are registered without beginning, that is, they forget the http prefix. All slashes in the names of sites are also important. In order not to make this mistake all the time, when you open the home page change tab, do not delete the address registered there. In the same format, you must enter your own, and then the home page will work without a hitch.

There are times when the saved Explorer home pages have crashed. This is often seen when working with software products that impose their own vision of the start page and search engines. To prevent repetition of home page crashes in such cases, follow the recommended steps:

- clear the cache using the CCleaner program;
- make changes to the parameters of automatic download, namely to exclude software products from search engines from it;
- restart the computer;
- delete irrevocably the programs imposed during the installation of other software products, which often refer by their names to popular search engines, for example, Sputnik.Mayl.ru;
- make changes to the home page settings, save them and be sure that there are no errors in further work with your favorite browser.

It turns out that everything is not as problematic as it seems at first glance. The main thing is to understand a little with the topic and all problems are solved by themselves.

It would seem that the Internet Explorer browser is used by few people today, but this is not the case, it is still used by many users. By the way, you can make sure of this if you look at the statistics of site traffic, for example. And these users sometimes have problems associated with changing their favorite home page for various reasons: either when installing a program or game, the start page was changed, or the browser's start page changed due to a virus.

After reading this manual, you will learn how to:

  • change the start page of Internet Explorer
